Neck Strain
The stretching or tearing of the muscles or ligaments encasing the cervical spine (a portion of the spine within the neck) is called as neck strain. Neck is prone to injury because the amount of muscles and ligaments around the cervical spine is small compared to that in the other spine regions such as thoracic, lumbar and sacral.
How does Neck Strain occur?
Neck strain may occur with the forcible movement of head and neck as in the case of whiplash injury. As the muscles in the neck have to hold the head up, they are under constant stress. Due to stress the muscles get tightened leading to pain in the neck. Sometimes the sudden and sharp movement causes tearing of the muscles and ligaments. Neck strain can be caused by injury in an accident. You may also suffer neck strain when you sit in front of computer screen for a long time or keep your face on one side while you are asleep.
