If you have a limited budget, you will not need to purchase new machines. You can make do with the second hand exercise machines.

Area- Consider the amount of space and exact dimension. Floors can withstand the pressure of heavy weights and equipment and therefore it would be better to think of installing equipment on the basements.

Bench- Bench is a basic and inevitable piece of equipment for any home gym. An ideal bench should be well built, that can at least incline, if not decline, and have a leg attachment. Its padding should be thick and its width should support the back. In addition to this the shoulder blades should not dig into the edges as it might cause unnecessary discomfort.

Squat Rack- A squat rack is also needed for your home gym. An and good quality squat rack comprises adjustable height uprights, a lat tower/low cable pulley and an incline/decline free moving bench with a leg attachment.

Cast Iron Weight Set- Cast iron is a weight plate material. If you want to purchase the plastic plates that are filled with cement, be be prepared to re-invest a year or two as cement may get shattered after some time. If you want to set up an advanced home gym, it is advisable to invest in some of the larger plates (15s, 25s and 35s).

Chin-Up Bar- You can use a chin-up bar in place of a lat tower station. However, a full fledged gym includes both a chin-up bar and lat tower.

Calf Block- It is a block of wood used for doing seated calf raises. The calf block should support both feet at shoulders width.

Training Log- It is needed to track workout progress. A simple note book will work. Keep a record of the number of reps, weight used and basically anything else important during the workout.
